WWMF Community Funday

Watch the Video Review of our Community Funday which took place on Saturday 14th July 2007.

How Great is our God?

How great is our God?  A chorus we sing at church but also a genuine question asked by many believers.  So how do we know His greatness?  There are many ways, big and small, sometimes we recognise them immediately and other times it takes us a while to notice God’s hand in a situation. There are also times when the awesomeness of our God is so prominent, that He chooses to wrap it up in a special way, so as not to blow those, who don’t know Him, away.

One special way that God chose to display his awesomeness, was on Saturday 14th July, when Worldwide Mission Fellowship (WWMF), held a Community Funday at Norwood Park.  The day began tentatively, with blustering winds and an overcast sky, but God did not allow six months of preparation to result in cancellation; so in faith, members of the church, struggled against the winds to put up marquees, the poles of which blew down a number of times, until they remained sturdy in the ground.  Suddenly a circle of light appeared just over the park, the sunshine shone through, and the winds were rebuked.  It was a scene somewhat analogous of our walk with Christ.  The Funday had begun.

It was astonishing to see the many ways that God had drawn people in.  Many passers by were attracted by the sweet refrains of the Sunday school children. MPs, councillors and the police came through invitation, others responded to flyers.  One memorable visitor had vowed never to visit the park again because he had witnessed a terrible scene there many years before.  However, he had heard the sound of enjoyment coming from the park and could not help but wander over.  He was touched by what he saw and felt that the Funday had cleansed what he had once considered tainted.  He may not have known it but he had perceived the purifying power of God.

Pastor Dennis with Tessa Jowell MP Evangelism was the word of the day and it could be seen in every direction of the park.  The choir evangelised through song, whilst WWMF members sowed seeds and brought conviction by spreading the message of the Gospel amongst the park and talking about Jesus to those who wanted to listen.  The church’s heart was displayed particularly to five teenage boys, one of whom was wearing a T-shirt with the face of a young deceased friend.  They were clearly lost and disillusioned by their life experiences and were ministered to by some of the young WWMF men, who promised to pray for them.  It was wonderful to see them listen and pay attention to the words of Christ.

There were free refreshments prepared by the WWMF caterers and the day was practical as well as spiritual.  Wisdom cried out to the public, in the form of various stalls giving out information to help the community.  Members of WWMF also function as representatives of the following organisations, Hope UK (a Christian organisation which teaches drugs education) & Street Pastors. They spoke to parents and children & gave Information about their work in the community. WWMF also support fair trade & promoted the benefits of being fair trade consumers.  There were stalls promoting family health and the London Fire Brigade came to teach children about fire safety.

One of the most rewarding and obvious elements of God’s greatness was Robert, whom the church had met at the previous Funday, a year earlier.  He was there from early morning, helping and being a living witness of what engaging with the community can do.  Robert had been set free from alcoholism, is now born again and soon to be baptised.  Robert thanked Jesus for blessing him with happiness and for all the support given to him by members of the church.  The church love Robert and pray that many more Roberts are set free and delivered from all addictions in Jesus’ name.

Our Pastor, Dennis Greenidge, for a period of several years, would sit on a hill in the park and pray for the local people of West Norwood.  In this year of ‘Recover All’, God has answered his prayers and allowed us to take back our communities for Jesus.  So how great is our God?  He does super abundantly more than we could ever imagine.  He is the precious lamb, worthy above all.
